This weekend the Warrior football program battled the Bearcats of Wheeler and came out victorious in both Varsity and JV action. On Friday night Calumet defeated Wheeler 38-22 to improve the season record to 2-1 and start the Greater South Shore Conference slate on a positive note. The offensive attack was led by Phillip Collins (Sr) and C.J. Cooper (Jr) who both tallied over 100 yards of rushing on the night. The defense came out strong early and then surrendered the lead when Wheeler tied the game at 22-22 in the second half. After making some adjustments the Warrior defense played a strong 4th quarter. Scott Flores (Soph) intercepted a Wheeler pass and CJ Cooper finished the drive to put the Warriors up for good.
On Saturday the JV continued the winning ways and defeated their Wheeler counterparts 28-8 on the backs of a strong team effort on defense and on the legs of Justin Marshall (Fr) and Benard Taylor (Soph) who matched their varsity teammates with over 100 yards of rushing on the day.
The Warriors will host Whiting in an important GSSC matchup Friday at 7:00. The home Warriors have not defeated the Oilers since a 2009 victory by the score of 12-9
